The Netherlands has had several nuclear reactors since the 1960s. The nuclear power plant at Borssele has been operating since 1973 and supplies electricity day and night. In addition, nuclear reactors are used for research and for producing medical isotopes that are used in hospitals. The nuclear power plant in Borssele has a capacity of approximately 485 megawatts (MW). The two new nuclear power plants that we are going to build will each have a capacity of at least 1,000 MW.
