Questions about
Plan, location, and implementation

Is the location already known?

No, NEO NL does not make decisions on this either. These decisions are made by the government. For the latest information, please visit the government's website: overkernenergie.nl

When will construction begin?

That is not yet known. It depends on the choice of location and technology. It also depends on numerous building and environmental permits. All these steps must be completed before construction can begin. This will take several more years.

Who will build the nuclear power plants?

NEO NL is in dialogue with two technology suppliers, Électricité de France (EDF) and Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC). A tendering procedure will be conducted to select a technology supplier. Once this procedure has been completed, we will know who will build the nuclear power plants.

Do you also use knowledge of developments abroad?

More and more countries, such as France, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, and the United States, are building or planning new nuclear power plants. NEO NL monitors these developments and actively exchanges knowledge to expand Dutch expertise. We also work with experts from other countries to make use of lessons learned from new nuclear construction projects in other countries.

How do you ensure that the project does not become more expensive than expected or take longer than expected?

We learn from the experiences of other countries. This teaches us what caused other projects to become more expensive or take longer. We incorporate these lessons into the development process from the outset. Nevertheless, a project of this scale will encounter unexpected obstacles. This is because we are working with many different parties to realise this project. These unexpected obstacles can result in additional time or costs that we cannot foresee or prevent in advance.

What is the basis for the number of people employed during construction?

This number is based on the Third Party Review of the technical feasibility studies that have been carried out, also known as the TPR report. This report indicates that the suppliers in the technical feasibility studies are provisionally assuming a peak of 10,000 employees on site during construction.
