NEO NL will develop two new nuclear power plants

NEO NL stands for Nuclear Energy Organisation Netherlands. On behalf of the government, we are responsible for the construction, operation, and eventual decommissioning of two new nuclear power plants in the Netherlands. In doing so, we are contributing to the energy transition and the achievement of the Dutch climate goals.

ABOUT NEO NL

Coordination and expertise in one place

NEO NL is both an implementing and knowledge-driven organisation. We will further develop knowledge about nuclear energy gained through our work. To achieve this, we collaborate with (international) specialists, knowledge institutes, and educational institutions.

The government decides why and where, NEO NL what and how.

The government determines policy on nuclear energy, while NEO NL is in charge of the construction of two nuclear power plants. In the current preparatory phase, information is still limited. Further along in the process, once we know the location of the two power plants and who will supply the technology, we will be able to provide more information. For up-to-date information about the choice for nuclear energy (why) and the possible locations of the nuclear power plants (where), visit the government website: www.overkernenergie.nl.

Our Perspective

A good relationship with the community

The development of two nuclear power plants has a significant impact on the surrounding area. We therefore consider it essential to maintain good relations with the people who live and work in the area. We will actively engage in dialogue from the moment the location is known. We will listen to feedback and take the interests of local residents and other stakeholders seriously. Together, we will embark on a long-term partnership to realise this project.

Time path

Our path ahead

The development of two new nuclear power plants is carried out in multiple phases. Some phases overlap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about the two new nuclear power plants
How many nuclear power plants will NEO NL build?

NEO NL has been commissioned to oversee the construction of two nuclear power plants. In the future, another two could be added. The government is exploring the opportunities and possibilities for the third and fourth nuclear power plants. For the latest information, please visit the government's website https://www.overkernenergie.nl/

Is the location already known?

No, NEO NL does not make decisions on this either. These decisions are made by the government. For the latest information, please visit the government's website: overkernenergie.nl

When will construction begin?

That is not yet known. It depends on the choice of location and technology. It also depends on numerous building and environmental permits. All these steps must be completed before construction can begin. This will take several more years.

Who will build the nuclear power plants?

NEO NL is in dialogue with two technology suppliers, Électricité de France (EDF) and Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC). A tendering procedure will be conducted to select a technology supplier. Once this procedure has been completed, we will know who will build the nuclear power plants.

Do you also use knowledge of developments abroad?

More and more countries, such as France, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, and the United States, are building or planning new nuclear power plants. NEO NL monitors these developments and actively exchanges knowledge to expand Dutch expertise. We also work with experts from other countries to make use of lessons learned from new nuclear construction projects in other countries.
